OK, Bugdet Horn Deadening, huh. Might as well throw in an on-topic post.
Use the active ingredients of Aquaplas;
Mud...
...more specifically, clay and powdered mica.
Even more specifically, clay and a $2.99 bag of Vermiculite from the garden center (crush method of choice). (WEAR RESPIRATORY PROTECTION!)).
Even powdered, mica is still flat particles. When compacted, the flat sides align like a deck of cards. When held in a flexible medium and allowed to vibrate, all those flat sides are rubbing together, making... heat. Energy converted from mechanical to thermal. Same thing fiberglass batting does in a box.
It's done with metal fines too, but both less friendly and efficient.
It would take a lot of wood chips to equal the frictional surface area of a mica emulsion, but cedar might add a bit of ambience...
Any thoughts on O2 181 Series Duct Sealant by Vapco....... medium viscosity?

Unfortunately, the companies web page tells next to nothing about it........ only info is the MSDS. I'm interested becasue I may be able to get a couple of gallons locally cheap.

Deserves elaboration; How to compact a free emulsion?
1. High solids to polymer ratio. All dampening compounds of this type have very high solids content. Pack 'em in there!
2. Polymer shrinkage. Cured Aquaplas shrinks up to 20%. The shrinkage is mostly responsible for the wrinkled "look", but that's only a side effect. Shrinkage forces the solids in closer contact=more friction.
Very familiar with it.* Probably still have some old jeans wearing it. We used it almost exclusively till last year, only changed because its' NFPA flame/smoke spread rating is a little too high for public buildings (non-flammable, but smokes in a fire).
It's primarily a sealant though. Acoustical attenuation is less than specialized products, but for ~14/gallon it ain't bad. Would serve as a good base emulsion though, add solids to taste. Minimal shrinkage.
Now we use CADS. Cheaper and meets standards.

Mechanical contractor. Commercial (hospital, school, etc.) HVAC/plumbing (what a waste of electronics school). 02 Tight was our duct sealant. (nowdays, mostly all I do is Google data from the office and interpret specs).
Heck, it's pretty cheap new. Oh yeah, "Budget". The CADS is $9.
Any solid (that remains a solid) will do something, flats give the best area.

The VA hospital we're building now may prove a sound dampening education for me. VA hospital sound standards are almost maddeningly quiet. With 70ft long air handlers and duct you can walk around in, it may be a challenge when the little guys with the microphones show up.
That's the trick. Flexible, sticky, and shrinky. That's where the polymer guys come in. If I can find (what I believe is) the patent again, you can try to decipher it. A chemist I'm not. (But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night).
The duct sealer has it all but the shrinky.
